Booby Controversy
Stop the presses! This just in! Women in
comics have big boobs!!!!11 OMFGROFLMAOWTFBRB!!!11one
Believe it or not folks it's true. Women in
comics are more often than not portrayed with somewhat gigantic breasts.
This, of course, is nothing new to the industry and shouldn't come as
much of a shock. Yet, it seems there has been quite the bit of
controversy as of late. Are our morals shifting towards a society
where we recognize the sex-symbol portrayal of 99% of women in comic
books and hope to get rid of them, thus bettering ourselves as a whole?
No. More likely people just like to pretend something is
offensive, because someone else might think it actually is and judge
them for thinking it's not. Following me? Eh doesn't matter,
because I'm digressing. On with the booby show!
Case 1 - Michael Turner's Justice League of
America #10 Cover

Now, I won't deny that Power Girl's (Front Right)
breasts are indeed quite large, but I don't see why this cover in
particular created such a controversy. Apparently, writer Brad
Meltzer saw the initial cover drawing on the left and thought that Power
Girl's boobs needed to be turned down a notch. Thus, you get the
cover on the right for the final print.
Huff, where to start. First of all, it's
Michael Freakin' Turner. Sure, pretty much every comic book artist
draws women with big breasts, but Michael Turner is well known for it.
For example...

So don't hire Michael Turner if you don't want big
breasted women. Secondly,
it's Friggen Power Girl. She is drawn with huge breasts by every
artist. In fact, she is known for having huge breasts. If
there is any one female character known today for having gigantic
boobies, it's Power Girl.
Yet, people get Michael Turner to draw Power Girl
and are then somehow shocked that he draws her with big breasts.
Then you change the art so that they are smaller (barely) and there is
still a big controversy over it. Get over it people. Here is
a solution for you. If you are offended by Michael Turner's big
breasted Power Girl, opt for the variant cover. That should solve
all your big boob problems...

Yeah, that's much better...
Case 2 - Heroes for Hire #13 Cover

Now this comic isn't even out yet, but as soon as
this cover image was released there was a whole helluvalot of hoopla
going on about it. So much so that Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada had
to make some comments on it.
At first you are probably, like I was, wondering
why this cover was creating so much controversy. Sure, they are
tied up and scantly clad, but that is nothing new. Well, believe
it or not, it's because certain people saw this and thought, "OMG HENTAI
TENTACLE RAPE!!" Those people were most likely ones that watch
that stuff, as otherwise that thought would never even pop into your
mind. But alas it did, and thus a controversy.
Heroes for Hire was basically created (or should I
say, rebooted) so that Billy Tucci could draw more women with big boobs.
So, having such a scandalous cover doesn't really surprise me. As
for the "tentacles", they in fact belong to, as explained by Quesada as
I don't actually read this series, the Brood, a long-time X-Men foe.
So maybe people should do a little research before they fly off the
handle saying something looks like tentacle rape or what have you.
Case 3 - The Adam Hughes Mary Jane Statue

Once again, even more so than Michael Turner, Adam
Hughes is known for drawing busty women. How about another Power
Girl example...

Case and point.
Thus, when you have him design a statue, you are
doing it for a reason, because of how he portrays women. Now, the
Mary Jane statue in particular was found more offensive because, beyond
her abnormal proportions, she is "doing Spider-Man's laundry".
Which of course, isn't the case. She is doing laundry and stumbles
upon the Spider-Man costume, thus, a throwback to the classic Spider-Man
days. Either way though, people make it out to be what makes for
the best controversy. Now, am I saying women in comics should have big breasts? No, that
isn't what I'm saying. All I'm saying is that this is the way
things are right now and people shouldn't be surprised by them. If
you are picking up a superhero comic, you are going to get women with
big boobs and guys with ripped abs. No superheroes look like real
people. They are exaggerated (gasp!). So how about people
just quit creating controversy and enjoy the comics. If something
offends you, how about this... don't read it!
