Religion in Schools
by Jason DeShaw

We have in our country, as most of you know, a separation of church and state.  Which I guess means we try our best not to mix religion into government and so forth, so no one is offended and no one is having beliefs pushed upon them.  This is, I believe a good idea.  No one should have a religion or certain set of beliefs forced upon them.  It is one of our freedoms in this nation to believe what we want.

Now, it is a little past Christmas and there have been a couple things that have caught my attention, and has made me ask myself this question... What types of things are acceptable to be found in school?  I will be explaining a couple things I have seen, and you be the judge.

    The Christmas Tree

5th Period, Psychology class.  About a week before Christmas, my teacher has put up a Christmas tree in his classroom.  You know, basic tree, in which he allows his students to bring in things to decorate it with.  Seems harmless.

Almost immediately it causes controversy.  He tells us how teachers have come in and lectured him for half an hour about how the Christmas tree shouldn't be in school, because it is a sign of Christianity.  These I bet are the same idiots who try to take the word "God" out of the pledge of allegiance.  My teacher defended himself with something along these lines:

I had my very own students decorate this tree.  Nothing on the tree symbolizes any sort of religious beliefs and in no way am I promoting Christianity.  Would I be offended if I walked into a class room with a menorah?  If I traveled to another country to go to school, would I expect them to withhold their usual activities native to the country just for me?  I think not.

I believe he has many strong points in that topic, and there for, accept the Christmas tree as being acceptable in schools.

   The Health Teacher

4th Period, Health Class.  We are starting with our sexuality unit (horn balls in back celebrate), and are learning about the reproductive organs.  One student asks, "Why do we have nipples?"  Now, he was I believe referring to, why do MEN have nipples, but I guess Ms Z. thought he meant, why does anyone have nipples.  Her response...

       Because God gave us nipples.

Now, she is pretty dumb and an unqualified teacher, so you know, maybe I could have let that one slide out of stupidity, but there was more.  In reference to the cervix of the female, she said it had no nerves, because...

If it had nerves, sex would hurt too much, and we would of never gotten past Adam and Eve.

Oh yeah, that makes sense, we would have never gotten past Adam and Ev... wait what?  Damn you Ms Z!  There is a little difference I think between having a Christmas tree in your room, and proclaiming the existence of God and Adam and Eve.  Health, of all classes, shouldn't be explaining why things happen by way of God.  She isn't just giving her thought, she is telling us that is why they happened.  Now that is something I could find offensive.

Now, I'm just stating my opinions in all of this of course, but you tell me, what do you find more offensive...
