What made Pulp
Fiction (and to a lesser extent Reservoir Dogs) so great is that it was so
different, unique, and raw. It seemed so 'out-there' while still in the
realms of our own reality. It was special.
Pulp Fiction made
Tarantino larger than life. His movies were all unique and special.
It was Tarantino fever. When you saw his name on a movie, you could expect
that this would be more than just a film, it would be an experience.
Sadly, I believe this has changed. Not because his movies are no longer
good or that the market for his films has changed, its just that his name no
longer holds the same value. Why is this you may ask? The answer my
friend is because of three little words... "Quentin Tarantino Presents"
The first time I saw
these words was on the movie 'Hero', and this is what I heard from people around
town...
"I can't wait to see
Quentin Tarantino's new movie Hero, it looks awesome and I mean come on, its
Tarantino! It has to be good!"
For those of you who
don't know what it means to be a Presenter to a movie, it basically means, well,
nothing. Quentin Tarantino had absolutely nothing to do with the
production of this movie in any aspect at all. He didn't write it, direct
it, produce it, edit it. It all came down to, "Hey, we aren't going to
release this movie in America unless we can slap someone's name on it," and
since Tarantino is all about the Asian movies, he fit the bill.
It wouldn't have
been so bad if it stopped there, but it didn't. Tarantino's named started
to appear on other movies as well. 'My Name Is Modesty' is one his name
appeared on a year after the "Hero Incident", although with less press it seems.
And of course recently his named appeared on the movie 'Hostel'. This is a
summary Tarantino's involvement in Hostel... Basically, Eli Roth (creator
of the god-awful movie, Cabin Fever) was like "Hey I got this idea!" and
Tarantino was like "Cool do it!" Therefore, Hostel gets the Quentin
Tarantino Presents treatment.
"Ok, but that's only
three movies. What's the big deal?" you may be asking yourself, or
me... the point of the matter is you are probably asking it. Well the
thing is, its more than just new movies, but old movies as well. Tarantino
actually created a company called Rolling Thunder Pictures with the sole purpose
of releasing movies in which Tarantino thought should be more readily available
to the public. Here is an example...

QUENTIN TARANTINO'S
ROLLING THUNDER PICTURES PRESENTS
Chung King Express
He has nothing to do
with the creation of the movie, in fact he just likes the movie, but theres his
name and face for everyone to see. My God his name is twice as big as the
title of the movie! And look at that face of his in the corner, just look
at it... Man I wish I could slap my face and name on movies that I liked
and wanted others to see!
The thing I don't
understand is why Tarantino would do this. Does he see himself as some
savior of film? Only him and his great name can reveal these gloriously
mediocre movies to the public and save film as we know it! Whether that's
what he thinks or not, it doesn't matter. Rolling Thunder Pictures only
survived for 3 years before going out of business due to poor sales. The
only thing it really achieved was the further tarnishing of Tarantino's name.
Tarantino, please
stop whoring out your name. When your name is everywhere it looses its
value. Your name is no longer special. Your name has just become a
marketing ploy to gain a few extra dollars off feeble-minded people who are
tricked into thinking you somehow worked on the film they are about to see.
Then, when they are disappointed by what they have just seen, it reflects on you
Tarantino.
UGH! HE MADE
CABIN FEVER!! WHY WOULD YOU PRESENT A MOVIE MADE BY HIM!!! CABIN FEVER!!!!
IT STARS FRIGGIN SEAN FROM BOY MEETS WORLD!!! PANCAKES!!! PANCAKES!!!!!!!
Sorry. A
little relapse there. Anyways, Tarantino is a corporate whore and has lost
my respect. The End.
Note: Quentin Tarantino did
not actually Present this article, but most likely would have if given the
opportunity.
