Review: Grindhouse

Grindhouse won't move you to change the world or inspire deep philosophical thought, but it will give you your money's worth of entertainment.  This is definitely one of the most fun movies I have seen in years (if ever).

Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino bring you Grindhouse: Double Feature.  The movie is divided into two films (hence the double feature), one by each writer, with hilarious fake coming attractions in-between.  The entire movie is a combination of spoof and tribute to old slasher/exploitation films from times gone by.  Even the cinematography is shot to look old, complete with the occasional missing scene.  Oddly enough, this only adds to the films fun and experience.

First movie: Planet Terror

Robert Rodriguez presents Planet Terror, a zombie-filled action movie starring Bruce Willis and Naveen Andrews (Sayid from Lost woo!) among others.  From beginning to end, this movie is packed with nearly non-stop action.  Everything from the absurd to the disgusting happens in this zombie flick and every second of it is great.

The thing that makes this movie special though is how unique it actually is.  Yes, it's a zombie movie and yes, the plot is pretty much "escape from the zombies" but the way everything unfolds is quite interesting.  I mean seriously, the main woman gets a friggen gun for a leg (which I'm sure you've seen in the previews).  If that isn't original, I don't know what is.

If you go in looking to have fun watching a great zombie movie with over-the-top blood and gore, than you will have a great time.

Second movie: Death Proof

Death Proof is a complete departure from the first, but still just as great.  This film by Quentin Tarantino stars Kurt Russel as Stuntman Mike, who is pretty much a serial killer hunting down women.  His choice of weapon?  His "death proof" stunt car.

You can definitely see Tarantino's mark on this film, as it has his stereotypically long dialogues that help establish the main characters.  The pacing of this film is slower than Planet Terror (it isn't as action packed) and sometimes can feel a little long.  Fear not though, because when things get going at the end, it gets intense.  And really, it is all worth it for the ending.  My God, the ending.

Clocking in at almost three and a half hours, Grindhouse is pure entertainment.  I admit, this movie isn't for everyone (squeamish uptight people I'm looking at you!), but if you want to laugh harder than you have in awhile, see some incredibly disgusting things, and watch some of the most ridiculous events ever unfold, this movie IS for you.
