Introduction

The Star Trek Customizable Card Game was released in the winter of 1994 by an up-and-coming company known as Decipher.  Over the next few years, the game began to build upon its success and growing popularity.  Already the company had released multiple expansions along with a reprint of the premiere set.  Star Trek CCG was now becoming recognized as one of the top games in the CCG market, contending with the once untouchable Magic: The Gathering.  In January of 1997, Decipher released the Star Trek CCG Introductory Two-Player Game, which soon caught the eye of one Brady Lewis...

For those of you who do not know, a Customizable Card Game (CCG for short) is not like any other card game.  Each CCG has its own rules and set of cards, each based around its own world.  Cards are often available in booster packs (packs of 9-12 cards usually) or starter decks (pre-built playable decks of varying size).  Every card has a rarity assigned to it, most often into rare, uncommon, and common rarities.  Players must purchase their own cards and customize (hence the name) their own deck, then face off against an opponent and their deck.  That is what makes a CCG so special; no two games are ever the same.

If you go out to any local gaming store nowadays, you’ll be able to find CCGs for just about anything you can imagine.  Cartoons, sports, and movies are all now in the CCG market.  There are currently so many CCGs that one could say the market has been saturated and is past its prime, but things were not always like this.

When Star Trek CCG was released, the customizable card game was still new and fresh. You didn’t have a card game for every Saturday morning cartoon at that point.  There was only really one notable CCG out when Star Trek came out, and that is Magic: The Gathering.  Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you have no doubt heard at one point or another of the game Magic.  Magic has always dominated the CCG world and still lives on today.  Do not be fooled though, Star Trek put up one hell of a fight.

Star Trek was unlike any other card game on the market.  Players created an actual "space line" of cards, making it able for the player to move ships from mission to mission and beam down away teams to overcoming dilemmas and score points.  You were able to square off against an opponent in either hand-to-hand combat between alien races, or have a battle between an armada of spaceships.  Star Trek CCG was a very unique game indeed.

Yet, for four kids, Star Trek CCG was much more than just a great game, it was a part of their lives.  To them it was much more then just "a game".  It was about spending hours sitting in front of your cards, trying to think of how to create the perfect deck.  It was about hanging out with your best friends while enjoying doing something you loved.  It didn’t matter if you were the best or the worst at the game, it was just great to play, and for over four years, this is what Star Trek CCG was.

As it goes for all things, it eventually came to an end.  Time, along with other outside factors, eventually brought the game to an end.  With the end though, brings great memories of the game that must not be left to be forgotten.  They must be written down for all to see and remember for years to come.  This is where "Story of Trek" comes in.

The idea for "Story of Trek" came about in December of 2004.  It began merely as an idea for an article for PsychoNoble, but grew into so much more.  With more and more people wanting to contribute, the PsychoNoblers realized this was going to be something created for the site like nothing before.  It would be a giant document of the many years of playing Star Trek, retold as best as possible by Jason, Jordan, Brady, and Blake, with help from many others.

What follows is just that indeed.  Divided into 7 chapters, The Story of Trek is now complete.  So how did it all begin?  According to legend, it all started in 1997, in a small hobby shop, in a city known as Fargo...
