A Pathetic Tribute to Doug Funnie Introduction: Who is Douglas Yancy Funnie?
Things were not always as bleak. There was once a golden age of Nick, and that my friends, was the early '90s. It was when Ren and Stimpy were still up to their adult-oriented deeds, when The Rugrats were still babies, and when an eleven and a half year old boy had just moved from Bloatsburg, to Bluffington. Douglas Yancy Funnie was that boy. Sporting his white t-shirt and green vest (not to mention year-round shorts), Doug revolutionized cartoons. He wasn't a talking animal, he wasn't a super hero (usually), he was just a normal kid like everyone else. He had real problems like everyone else. Doug never had to worry about an anvil dropping on his head or falling off a cliff only to be reduced to a puff of dust. He wanted to be cool, he had a hopeless crush on a girl, and worried about school. This is why Doug was cool, because hewasn't cool, and neither were we. What made Doug even more real was his cast of Characters. Beyond having skin colors from all spectrums of the rainbow, Doug's family and friends were the most real people you could find on TV. The bully but still somewhat friend at school, the stranger-than-usual best friend, and who hasn't had a crazy neighbor at one point or another? These people were just as important to the show as Doug was, and helped sculpt its greatness. Doug also had the most memorable adventures. Who hasn't accidentally broken something (Mr. Dinks Grill) and tried to hide it and buy a new one? Ever find that lucky item (The Lucky Hat) and just have everything go your way? How about make that embarrassing video (Doug's music video about Patty) only to have it fall into the wrong hands?! You can't forget about Doug's failed band either... "Big... Think Big... Big!... Think Big!.... BIIIIG!" And of course the classic song that gave was inspiration to start that band... "Bangin' on a trash can... Drummin' on a street light... One little voice keeps callin' me callin' me..." Sadly for us and Doug, after a mere 4 seasons on Nickelodeon, Doug was cancelled. I'll never really understand why Nickelodeon cancelled Doug, it obviously was loved by all. Have you ever met someone who was just like, "You know, I always hated Doug"? Exactly, they don't exist! Unless of course they are referring to Disney's Doug. Yes, that's right, Disney. Once they wrap their tight grip around something, they'll squeeze out everything that was ever good about a show on to the ground. Doug had a different voice, Skeeter had new clothes, Roger was rich, and their High School was in the shape of Beebe's head. Poor poor Doug. It would of course be impossible to go over everything great about Doug, but with this tribute I will try to hit as many of the high points as I can. When we look back at Doug, lets try not to think of Disney's Doug, but the REAL Doug, Nickelodeon's Doug. That is the Doug we know and love. So without further adieu, from Beets to Zombie Chips and everything in between, this is A Pathetic Tribute to Doug Funnie. (P.S. Jim Jinkins rocks) |
